When Jim arrived home, fairly late, it was to find the answer phone blinking red with his message telling Blair that he had been delayed and a hastily scribbled note, fewer than half of the words legible, on the table - 'Jim... called... Naomi... won't be back... Thanks, Blair.' Not even sentinel senses could decipher the illegible words.Read more... )

The Ugly Underbelly of Fandom

There is a certain kind of writer who attaches no value to their own work on an emotional level. They write for attention. It’s the same kind of “writer” who dreams of writing a book so they’d be rich and famous. This is also the kind of “writer” who wants to write a book about their life because apparently, we ALL want to read about it and just don’t know it. This attention-seeking writer actually taints the fandom, and readers, with their pathological need for attention. They encourage readers to offer them suggestions for future plot developments, character arcs, and even pairings. Then when they write themselves into a hole because of they actually listened to all the crap they get back—they blame their “muse” for not being inspired to complete the story.

Of course, the worse part of an attention-seeking writer are the readers they leave in their wake who feel entitled to intrude on the process of other writers because they felt validated by a previous experience. They are utterly comfortable providing a list of wishes and wants to other writers in their feedback. If they want a certain pairing in a story—they demand it and will abuse a writer if they don’t get it.

I’ve said before that reader entitlement is the ugliest part of fandom. I’ve been threatened with rape and murder for not updating when a reader felt I should. There have been times when readers have essentially had screaming fits on my contact form or in an email because I didn’t write the pairing they wanted or I chose a Stargate project over a Harry Potter one for Rough Trade.

Some readers take my decisions regarding my own writing as a personal insult and have no problems letting me know that I’m ruining their life by not writing what they want me to write.

Recently, I had a reader send me a single sentence email, and it was:

“I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I hope you finish Phoenix before I die.”

At first, I was outraged, but I wasn’t particularly surprised since I’ve seen this kind of emotional blackmail in fandom before. I deleted the email without a response, and I put the sender on a filter in my email that automatically trashes any email she sends me in the future. Because I want no part of her bullshit but I do wonder how many other writers she’s approached with this disgusting tactic.

Those who only read in fandom don’t genuinely understand the creative process. They don’t understand the intimacy of writing or the emotional risk of posting it in public. They never will understand, really, and investing yourself in trying to make them is just intellectual masochism.

The hubby is doing better!

Between finally getting a good night's sleep last night and starting the steroids and antibiotic this morning, he's almost feeling human. He managed to eat some cookies and have real food for dinner tonight. Tomorrow we're going to have breakfast for dinner and then we'll do his delayed birthday dinner on Thursday. Which is steak, spaetzl, gravy and corn with chocolate cake for dessert. By that point he should be able to manage it just fine.

I got this week's story into preliminary format and created a cover for it. It's focused around a solar eclipse which is kind of awesome with the solar eclipse coming up. I even found a good piece of art that conveys a lot of the feel of the story. Made me happy to find it.

Steps are way low but hey, that's life. I don't much care. I should get my exercises, of course, but I haven't yet today.

I got 2200 words written on the novel. Jaden and Padma will be sharing an apartment because Ravinder, the Date From Hell, was not just a jerk, he was a con artist using a faked relationship with Jaden to convince people to fund his move to Phoenix. Full on cheating them out of tons of money. So yeah, Jaden is going to be staying with Padma, sleeping in her king-size bed, because Padma has no couch for Jaden to sleep on.

Oh, shucks! How terrible. *grin*

Yes, I'm having far too much fun with the story.

Goals for tomorrow include breakfast for dinner, exercises, getting the POD version of this week's story done, writing another chapter of the novel and taking care of the hubby.

Off to bath and bed for me--goodnight everyone!

That threw all my plans off

The hubby called me around 1:30 today and asked me to take him to the walk in clinic. Which, if you knew him, would make it very, very clear that he was very, very sick. So I left work, drove home, got him, and then spent a couple of hours there and at the pharmacy.

Official diagnosis, he's got laryngitis and epiglottitis. Which means, basically, that he's lost his voice and the epiglottis is swollen from some sort of infection. Thus pill steroids and antibiotics with probiotic supplements for him for the next couple of weeks. He's not happy but he's glad to know that no, it's not a virus and no, he's not being a wuss.

But then after five days of a fever, he really wasn't being a wuss at all.

That all meant that I got not anywhere near as much as I wanted done at work and I only got 800 or so words written on the novel. Can't be helped. Also didn't get this week's story into preliminary format for publishing. That's annoying but I'll work on it tomorrow.

Goals for tomorrow include getting the story into preliminary format, writing more than 800 words, picking blueberries and maybe, possibly, if I'm REALLY lucky, making a real dinner for the hubby. But I doubt that. His throat will probably take another day or two to stop hurting.

Off to bath and bed for me--goodnight everyone!

That went well

The hubby is still very sick so I had tons of time to write today. I got 3900 words written and Jaden has only just discovered that Ravinder has decided that they're engaged. Despite her punching him, walking out on him, tasing him later and getting him arrested. She's about to go nuclear on his ass. Possibly with her boss's assistance. Certainly with Padma's help.

I didn't come anywhere near my step goal but that was because of all the writing and staying home. Not a big deal. I'll live.

Also didn't make chocolate cake because the hubby's throat was so sore that he could barely manage to swallow canned soup. Cake was a non-starter. I'm hoping he feels better tomorrow so we can do his delayed birthday dinner on Tuesday, complete with cake presumably cooked tomorrow night after work.

Sort of a boring day, really, so there's not much to say.

Goals for tomorrow include getting my exercises, writing, taking care of the hubby, starting this week's novella for publishing, and that's about it.

Off to bath and bed for me--goodnight everyone!

Just read a lovely column called [Your Three Feet of Influence]. The author suggests that while we cannot control the world, we can choose what we do with the three feet directly around us, and whether we bring to that three feet justice, calm, and kindness or not. Great reading for this Sunday!

My nieces (4, 10) have been watching The Great British Baking Show, and decided that yesterday afternoon should be all baking, all the time. So I went over and helped out, and we made the FUSSIEST BAKED GOODS IMAGINABLE. First came the Banana Bread from America's Test Kitchen. What a pain in the ass that recipe is. And yet it made the best banana bread I have ever tasted, so I can do little but shake my fist and do what they say.

Then we made Blackberry Scones, which had the best-tasting scone mix imaginable, and which took forever to make. I think I'd like them better with blueberries or raspberries, but they're very tasty (no doubt from all the butter). Again, very fussy recipe, but the end product felt worth it.

At the end of the afternoon, niece C made brownies out of a box, and lo, we were glad for it :D

Woke up this morning stiff in every place imaginable, so I'll need to do a bit of gentle yoga to loosen back up after I finish this cup of tea. I feel like Andy in Parks and Recreation - working out is great and all but at what cost? :D

It's time for our regular reccer recruiting post, and to look ahead to the next month. So far we have ONE volunteer reccer who signed up for August with this fandom:

* Steven Universe ([personal profile] juniperphoenix)

So while we already have a few recs to look forward to in August, it would of course be awesome if we had some more recs. There is still plenty of opportunity for you to jump in and volunteer to rec next month (or to convince your friends to do some reccing). And many cheers for all of our members who volunteer to rec, especially if you rec regularly. Your valiant repeat efforts keep the comm alive.

Looking even further ahead so far NO reccer has volunteered for September, so that month definitely still needs some love (and recs! *g*) too. So please consider reccing in a fandom of your choice, whether small or huge, and comment on the sign-up post and volunteer for August, September or even further ahead if you are so well organized, that you know your fannish interests and time commitments in advance. It's only four recs as a minimum, and you can rec any genre or rating. Or promote us to your friends or in your favorite communities so others do the work.

Open Rec Posting

The monthly open reccing period for all members starts now and lasts until the end of July. Since the general prompts don't seem to work as inspiration, I've decided to stop adding them, but to keep the open reccing period in case anyone wants to slip a rec in, without having to come up with three others for a fandom. However the recs do still have to conform to the usual rec format and follow the rules for what is allowed to be recced here.

(Comments here are disabled, because I want to bundle volunteering in the sign-up post so that nothing gets lost, and you can see the list of claimed slots there too.)

Why this piece is awesome: Most of the pre-canon art about Peter and Yondu focuses on a really young Peter, so I like this one because Peter is in his mid-to-late teens. I love how this piece tells a whole story in one image, and the details are fantastic.

Why this piece is awesome: It's a marvellous strong portrait of Diana on the horse, from near the end of the movie, wrapped in a fur-trimmed cloak and looking every inch the warrior princess. Also I love the colours.

My new novel is a blast. The girls are off on their date, having sushi together, and then they're going to go off to watch a Lesbian Romcom movie together. Right now, they're making each other blush by calling each other Nagel Girls (Padma) or Godward girls (Jaden).

Just, you know, Padma has dark skin instead of paper white skin and Jaden's a bit fuller at bust and hip than Godward's women usually were. Still a ton of fun finding the artists that best matched my images of the girls in my head. XD

I ran errands today, picking up bite valves for my water bottle, spices, Legos for the hubby, chocolate and grapefruit gummy bears, Lush and then getting the hubby a new pillow since his was dying.

Then I came home, surfed the web a bit, wrote, made dinner, wrote some more and now I'm off to bath time. Because I got a Lush Floating Island and I fully intend to use it. I also returned a bunch of Lush bottles so I got a free fresh face mask. I'll probably try that tomorrow. It's a little late to do it today.

Goals for tomorrow include laundry (2/3's done already), making steak and cake for the hubby's delayed birthday dinner despite his still being sick, writing (hopefully a lot), getting next week's story started for publishing, and that's about it.

Off to bath and bed for me--goodnight everyone!

Comic-Con: many fandoms, much wow

I know some people don't get why tumblr is awesome, but I think it's awesome because on San Diego Comic-Con weekend, it's really an all-fandom all-points-bulletin for tons and tons of fannish news. So far this weekend I have reblogged full con panel videos from The Walking Dead, Shadowhunters, and Legion. I've posted interviews and Q&As with The Defenders and J2 +Misha Collins. I've reblogged photos from Justice League, Blade Runner 2049, and Ready Player One, and shots of the cast from Arrow, Supergirl, Justice League, Kingsman, etc. I've reblogged pics of covetable merch, new posters, excellent cosplayers, and oh right, then there are the trailers.

I love fandom so much sometimes. :)

Today I told my yoga instructor about my ankles and calves, and what we were doing in PT. It's always good to let her know what's going on, and we had a long conversation about how hamstrings and calf muscles can pull on ankles and plantar fascia and so on.

And then she proceeded to make the entire class about stretching out hamstrings, calves, and plantar fascia. Oh my god.

It was great for me. My PT exercises don't last a whole hour, and aren't as dedicated to holistic work, so I felt great when I was done. But mid-class I was silently cursing :D At one point she had us get into downward dog, then lower our knees almost to the floor, hold it, and then come slowly back up. She then had us shorten the distance between our hands and feet and do it again. And again. And I wanted to vocalize my feelings as "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" I did not, however, and it was all for the good.

Yesterday at 3pm it was 94F, felt like 110F. Holy moley. Today is better so far, tomorrow will be a little better again, and Monday we've been promised a balmy 80F. The main result of all of this is that all my everyday bras are in the wash right now, as they were treated very badly by the heat, leaving me with only demi-cup lacy bras to wear today. My girls have not been this perky or fancy on a weekend in a very long time. I keep expecting to be going somewhere, but nope, I'm just the perkiest and fanciest in my house.

I'm still waiting for my photobucket links to break with a kind of fascination of watching a crash in slow mo. I pretty much only use photobucket for fanish stuff, and that sparingly since I don't do a lot of art, mostly banners and things these days. I haven't lost access to my account yet.

But really that had me browsing through pictures on my phone recently since that's my main camera for recording my life, and it's kind of hilariously made up of two things for the past few months: bread in various stages and animals that my cat has killed and brought to the door. Which is even more hilarious when you know that my 1st grade science project was titled "Animals that my cats catch." So yeah.

Anyway. I'm making regular loaf bread today from the Joy of Cooking, and tomorrow I'm going to do Casatiello, which is an enriched Italian bread that has chunks of cheese and salami in it. I haven't gone grocery shopping for the extra ingredients yet, which is why it's waiting till tomorrow.

Been working on my Teen Wolf fic this week. I'm kind of feeling like I want to clear off what's ongoing before starting something really new. I'm still messing with Dragon Age short fic, but I don't really have a direction for a lot of that, though I'm thinking I might once I get to some mysterious critical mass.

Still been reading a lot of Dragon Age fic. This week's rec is
Haven (256723 words) by SageFic
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cullen Rutherford/Female Mage Trevelyan
Summary: Kate Trevelyan, mage and earnest, genteel nerd, travels to the Conclave with Colleen Lavellen, an ex-Dalish-turned-librarian, and Robert Trevelyan, her charming smuggler cousin. But when the Divine's peace talks explode, Robert falls in with bad company, Coll finds herself chasing mercs, and Kate becomes...the Herald of Andraste? Sort of. Kate has absolutely NO idea what she’s doing, and her growing attraction to a certain former templar isn’t helping.

Why I love it: This covers just the time in Haven starting a little before the game with some really great character work throughout. Basically I love this story for the conversations you get between characters. It delves into the mage-templar conflict, and really sets up a nice discussion between mage!Trevelyan and Cullen about Kirkwall that is really well done and not seen very often. Early scenes include Divine Justinia, and there's a lot of good daily life included. It diverges enough from gameplay to keep it interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the Lavellen or male!Traveleyan characters that are included, or the epistolary chapters, but over all it's good.
